Morocco Plans Largest Photovoltaic Solar Power Project
Morocco is planning to launch its largest photovoltaic and wind power project in Western Sahara Desert to supply electricity to Casablanca city through an electricity network
Ouarzazate Solar Power Station. As of 2019, renewable energy in Morocco covered 35% of the country's electricity needs.
Morocco has since pledged to increase the renewables in its electricity mix to 52% by 2030, made up of 20% solar, 20% wind and 12% hydro. In November 2009 Morocco announced a solar energy project worth $9 billion which officials said will account for 38 percent of the North African country's installed power generation by 2020.
The $5.6 billion construction effort will help Morocco meet its 2030 target of renewables comprising 52% of its power generation capacity. 9 Beyond these projects, the development of newer renewable power mega-projects is being directly driven by the needs of Morocco's green energy ecosystem and international renewable energy supply chains.
Solar and wind power accounted for a combined 21.3% of the kingdom's 2022 total installed capacity, with hydroelectric power comprising 16.7%. 6 While Morocco's 2022 wind power capacity stood at 1.77 gigawatts (GW) and solar was at 1.43 GW, solar power capacity will soon surpass wind power in the kingdom.
